US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy urged employers to think carefully about their remote work policies, and health systems to provide training for doctors to recognise the health risks of loneliness.
Dr Murthy will serve in the new position alongside his continued duties as the Surgeon General, the White House said in a statement.
To a question on the current COVID crisis in India and if the US might face a similar situation, Murthy hoped that it never happens.
Indian-American Murthy, who has become the US Surgeon General for the second time, has lost seven of his family members, both in the United States and India.
Vivek Murthy previously served as the US surgeon general under the Obama administration. He had been advising US President Joe Biden on the coronavirus pandemic.
During his confirmation hearing by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on Thursday, Murthy, 43, said that Americans are struggling due to the pandemic.
