The Supreme Court refused to grant bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy matter, saying there was a prima facie case against them under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Reacting to the court's decision, Umar Khalid's father, S Q R Ilyas, said he had nothing to say about the Supreme Court's refusal to grant bail to his son.

Umar Khalid was arrested in September 2020 for his alleged role as one of the “masterminds” behind the riots, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.
According to Umar Khalid's partner Banojyotsna Lahiri, the jailed activist's parents were in the US December last year where they met several people including Mamdani.
The lawmakers sought clarity on why judicial proceedings in Khalid’s case have yet to commence despite the passage of more than five years since his arrest.

The submissions were made before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai during arguments opposing the framing of charges against Khalid in the UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots in Delhi.
The protest followed a Supreme Court decision on Friday to adjourn hearing on the bail applications of the accused for another week.

“The probative value of the evidence against the Appellants Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, prima facie and at this stage, cannot be branded as weak,” the court said in the order running 133 pages.
A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur, which reserved its order on July 9 after noting the arguments on behalf of the prosecution and various accused, is hearing the pleas.
Khalid will be allowed to be released from December 28 to January 3.
The bail pleas by other co-accused in the case — student activist Sharjeel Imam and Gulfisha Fatima, 'United Against Hate' founder Khalid Saifi and others — are also listed for fresh hearing before a bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai was hearing Khalid's fresh application for a grant of regular bail.
The top court said it would also hear Khalid's plea seeking bail in a case lodged under anti-terror law UAPA over his alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the northeast Delhi riots of February 2020 on the same date.
A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi said the matter needs to heard on a non-miscellaneous day. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are non-miscellaneous days in the apex court when matters which require detailed hearing are taken up.
The court also said while Khalid wanted the court to exercise its discretion in favour of his interim bail application, he did not want to argue his application seeking copies of certain documents.
Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted relief to Umar Khalid from December 23 to 30.
Umar Khalid and Khalid Saifi, who were already on bail in the present case, however, will remain in jail since they were also arrested in other cases related to the riots, including one pertaining to the larger conspiracy behind it.
"There is no merit in the bail appeal. Bail appeal is dismissed," said a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagar.
The bench was hearing Umar Khalid’s plea challenging a trial court’s order which had on March 24 dismissed his bail application in the case.
