In a related development, the Bombay High Court today asked why the government wasn't offering the three-month exemption from the ban to end-users of PET bottles.
A division bench of justices A S Oka and P N Deshmukh said it was a citizen's fundamental right to have good roads, streets and footpaths and people could not be deprived of their rights.
"The government had planned to make the entire payment of Rs 780 crore at one go, but it was no feasible. We could transfer only Rs 300 crore into the bank accounts of farmers so far. The payment of remaining Rs 480 crore will take some time," a senior officer from the state marketing department told PTI.
The high court was today informed that while some of the affected people were rehabilitated at suburban Mahul, several families are yet to be provided alternative accommodation. The number of such people stood at more than 60,000.
