"Right now we are importing 100 percent lithium-ion batteries, but efforts are on towards manufacturing them in India within the next one year," Geete said, adding that talks are on between BHEL and an American firm to form a joint venture for domestic manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries.
Last week, citing official sources that the prime minister would launch FAME II offering incentives for mass adoption of electric vehicles with an outlay of Rs 5,500 crore on September 7.
The minister for Heavy Industries and Public Sector Enterprises said about 300 charging stations have been established till now for electric vehicles.
The minister said steps have already been taken up by the government to start manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries in India.
The minister said the government wants to encourage adoption of electric mobility by changing people's mindsets and cooperation of the automobile industry.
The Department of Heavy Industry is taking the initiative towards formulation of the auto policy, but it is at an early stage and discussion with the industry is yet to start, the minister told PTI.
Recent reports suggested that the finance ministry had demanded a dividend payout between 30 per cent and 100 per cent from 12 of the state-owned firms from their 2016-17 or 2017-18 net profit, share buybacks or bonus shares.

In a bid to speed up the process of closing down sick central public sector enterprises (CPSEs), Modi government has sweetened the package for employees opting for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) by giving them attractive compensation at 2007 notional pay scale.

The Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2016-26, which envisages creation of an additional 50 million jobs, is likely to come up before the Union Cabinet in a month, Union Minister Anant Geete has said.
The Cabinet had earlier approved the closure of seven terminally sick public sector units, including Hindustan Cables, which have incurred a total loss of around Rs 3,139 crore over a period of time.
"While BHEL is gearing up for the future to face the upcoming challenges, he advised the company to step up its activities in diversification areas like solar and transportation, in a big way to address the slowdown in power sector," the company said in a statement.
