Experts share their views on how poor the monsoon will be, what would it mean for agriculture and its growth, and what the government needs to do to protect farmers and their livelihoods.
Ajit Tyagi, Director General of IMD, in an interview with CNBC-TV18’s Udayan Mukherjee and Mitali Mukherjee, said that the monsoon had a good onset on most parts of the country expect for states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced a slightly weak monsoon in July 2011 with an average of 95-96% rainfall is expected for this monsoon season.
Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Ajit Tyagi of MET says, the forecast this year, in quantitative terms, is of 98%, which falls in the normal category.
India on Tuesday forecast normal rains for the 2011 monsoon. In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Ajit Tyagi, DG, MET says, any lead forecast, which is the first estimate, has got little less reliability as compared to the June forecast. He further says, in the month of June, MET will give a much more detailed forecast.
