Aiming to extend financial relief to lakhs of families, the Assam government on Tuesday announced released a financial assistance package of Rs 9,000 to around 40 lakh beneficiary families under the Orunodoi scheme.
In Assam, there are about 40 lakh Orunodoi beneficiary families, and the total amount disbursed is Rs 3,600 crore,
making it one of the biggest single-day transfers.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Assam minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass said: "Not only in Assam, but for the first time in India, so many transfers have happened. The intention behind it is a very bona fide one because, when elections are approaching, there are widowed women, handicapped women, unmarried women, and divorcees who receive Rs 1200 every month."
Explaining the rationale behind the transfer, he added: "If they do not get this money due to the code of conduct during the elections, their lives will be affected. That is why we have decided, as the Chief Minister has said, to give Rs 9000 in one go. This ensures that their lives will not be affected until a new government is formed..."
The amount was transferred directly to the bank accounts of women beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) during a central event held in Guwahati.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office described the initiative as a “historic step towards strengthening women-led households in Assam.” The post said the transfer of Rs 9,000 to beneficiary families would further reinforce financial security and dignity for women across the State.
Women beneficiaries from across Assam joined the programme virtually through more than 3,800 public events organised at Gaon Panchayats, Autonomous Council constituencies, Village Development Committees and Urban Ward Committees.
Launched in 2020, the Orunodoi scheme is a flagship poverty alleviation initiative of the BJP-led Assam government under which one eligible woman from each beneficiary family receives Rs 1,250 per month as financial assistance.
