Reported numbers from banks look good but caution still warranted

Asset quality surprise?

For a second straight quarter, most big private sector banks and a few state-owned lenders reported asset quality numbers that were better than what analysts had expected. Not only did the gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio prove resilient, restructuring requests under the Reserve Bank of India’s one-time COVID recast scheme were also not too high.
