The Srinagar constituency is one of 6 Lok Sabha/Parliamentary constituencies in Jammu & Kashmir. It has been a bastion of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) for a large part of its political journey. Out of 13 terms, the JKNC has won 10 times, proving its entrenched hold over the region's electoral landscape.

This year, the main contenders for the Srinagar constituency in Jammu and Kashmir are Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi from the JKNC, Waheed Ur Rehman Para from the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP), Mohammad Ashraf Mir from the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP), and Amir Ahmad Bhat from the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP).

Notably, JKNC leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has represented the Srinagar constituency four times, securing victories in 1980, 2009, 2017, and 2019.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Abdullah clinched the seat with a substantial margin of 70,050 votes, defeating JKPDP candidate Aga Syed Mohsin. However, in 2014, JKPDP candidate Tariq Hameed Karra emerged victorious over Abdullah by a margin of 42,280 votes. Nonetheless, Abdullah regained the seat in the subsequent 2017 by-polls following Karra’s resignation.

The JKNC has encountered setbacks in winning the seat only thrice before – in 1971, when an independent candidate emerged victorious, and in 1996, when the Congress secured the win; and in 2014.

With a diverse voter demographic consisting predominantly of urban (60%) and substantial rural (40%) constituents, Srinagar embodies a spectrum of voices. Moreover, the constituency's religious composition, with Muslims comprising 95% and Hindus constituting a minority of 5%, underscores its unique character.

The Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency goes to the polls on May 13 in phase 4 of the General Elections.
