Begusarai, one of Bihar's pivotal Lok Sabha constituencies, presents a battleground for the upcoming 2024 elections. It comprises seven assembly segments, including Cheria-Bariarpur, Bachhwara, Teghra, Matihani, Sahebpur Kamal, Begusarai, and Bakhri, Begusarai is a general seat not reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). The constituency witnesses the active participation of major parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and the Janata Dal-United (JDU).

Currently represented by Union Minister and prominent BJP leader Giriraj Singh, the seat is witnessing intense competition as Singh seeks re-election. However, his path to victory is challenged by a united opposition under the banner of the I.N.D.I.A bloc, fielding joint candidate Awadhesh Kumar Rai of the CPI. The consolidation of anti-BJP votes poses a significant challenge for the BJP.

Notably, the candidature of Rai, from the Other Backward Castes (OBC), and a two-term Member of the Legislative Assembly from Bachhwara indicates the party’s intent to make the most of RJD’s solid Muslim-Yadav support base.

In the previous two Lok Sabha elections held in 2014 and 2019, the BJP emerged victorious in Begusarai. In 2019, Singh secured a significant win by defeating CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who is now with the Congress. Singh garnered 692,193 votes, while Kumar secured 269,976 votes. RJD's Tanveer Hassan received 198,233 votes.

The voting pattern in Begusarai has witnessed fluctuations over the past three decades. Once a Congress stronghold, the constituency shifted its allegiance to Nitish Kumar's JD (U) in 2004 and the BJP in 2014. Notably, Congress leader Rajo Singh represented Begusarai in 1998 and 1999, while JD (U)'s Rajiv Ranjan Singh, alias Lalan Singh, clinched victory in 2004.

The Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency goes to polls on May 13 in phase 4 of the General Elections.
