Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said singer Zubeen Garg's death not an accident, he was murdered.
“It is a plain and simple murder," Sarma said while speaking about the Assamese singer’s death. The Chief Minister shared the video of making the declaration on his official X handle. "One of the accused killed Garg, and others helped him. Four to five people are being booked in the murder case," Sarma claimed.
An adjournment motion moved in the Assam Assembly by the Opposition to discuss the death of singer Zubeen Garg was allowed by the Speaker at the request of CM on the first day of the winter session.
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi stood up with a request to allow their adjournment motions on the same issue.
The CM said it was "not culpable homicide" or a "criminal conspiracy" but a "plain murder".
The Assam CM told the House that new evidence examined by investigators indicates foul play, adding that the nature of the findings “rules out accidental death.”
This is not the first time Sarma hinted that Garg’s death may not have been accidental. In earlier statements, Sarma had repeatedly suggested that “something was not adding up” in the findings and indicated that the government was examining angles beyond an accident.
The one-member inquiry commission investigating Garg’s death has extended the deadline for submitting evidence and recording statements to December 12.
Garg, who was in Singapore to participate in the North East India Festival (NEIF), died while swimming in the sea during a yacht trip.
All seven arrested people, currently under judicial custody, were charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.
