Actor and Thalapathy Vijay, who heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is facing serious personal allegations after his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, filed for divorce, seeking to end their 27-year marriage.

According to a report by India Today, the petition has been filed under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, citing adultery and cruelty as grounds for divorce.

Allegations against Vijay

In her plea before the District Court, Sangeetha, 48, has alleged that Vijay, 51, was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor. The petition states that in 2021, she discovered that Vijay “was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress.”

Despite alleged assurances from Vijay that the relationship would end, the petition claims it continued “without any sign of remorse.”

The petition further alleges that Vijay excluded Sangeetha from his social and professional life and “continued to travel abroad and attend public events with the said actress.” It adds that the actress regularly posted photographs of these outings on social media and that Vijay “neither denied nor objected to these posts, thereby tacitly endorsing them.”

According to Sangeetha, these posts caused “repeated humiliation to her and their children.”

Claims of financial restrictions and mental cruelty

The divorce plea also claims that Vijay withdrew facilities previously enjoyed by Sangeetha and imposed financial restrictions, including curtailing her free movement.

She has alleged that his “continued adulterous conduct and repeated social media controversies” in 2024 caused her severe mental torture. The petition states that the marriage has effectively ceased to exist and now survives only on paper, offering her nothing but “mental agony, indignity, humiliation and suffering.”

The petition invokes Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act, which allow a spouse to seek divorce on grounds of adultery and cruelty.

As reported by India Today, the matter is currently before the District Court, and the outcome is yet to be determined.

Sangeetha, daughter of a Tamil industrialist and once a devoted fan of Vijay, married him on August 25, 1999, in a ceremony conducted with both Hindu and Christian rituals. The couple have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha.
