Amid repeated disruptions by the Opposition over a variety of issues, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day soon after it reassembled at 5 pm on Wednesday. The development took place just minutes before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address the House.

According to BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, several women MPs from the Opposition entered the well of the House, moved towards the Prime Minister’s chair, ignoring repeated appeals by senior ministers to return to their seats. The Prime Minister could not enter the House as the situation spiralled out of control, said Tiwari.

He said this was a part of a pre-planned conspiracy by the Opposition, adding that the Opposition MPs approached with an aggressive body language.

“Where the Prime Minister sits, they climbed up to that area, with women MPs leading while the men followed. They created a huge ruckus,” Tiwari alleged.

“This situation shows that since the public is defeating them (Congress), they will not allow us (BJP) to speak in the Parliament,” he stated.

Earlier in the day, the House was adjourned till 5 pm following an uproar over remarks by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey targeting the Gandhi family.

As the House reassembled at 5 pm, Tiwari said, “The Opposition came with the intention to attack us at 5 pm sharp. They surrounded the Prime Minister’s chair."

When PP Chaudhary of the BJP rose to speak in the House, Opposition members continued to raise slogans. Sandhya Rai, chairing the House, adjourned the proceedings within minutes.

With banners and placards in hand, Congress and other opposition members occupied the well of the House and the aisles.

Congress MPs Varsha Gaikwad, Jyotimani and others stood near Modi’s seat and refused to move away even after Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tried to reason with them, sources told CNN-News18.

The sources further claimed that Opposition women MPs reached the House before it assembled with the intent to disrupt the Prime Minister, saying their posturing “appeared very aggressive” and warning of “another attempt tomorrow” by the Congress during the Prime Minister’s address.

On Tuesday, eight Opposition members, including seven from the Congress and one from the CPI-M, were suspended for the remainder of the Budget session for unruly behaviour.

Since Monday afternoon, the House has been witnessing uproar after Gandhi was disallowed from quoting an article that cited the unpublished "memoir" of Naravane on the 2020 India-China conflict.
