Strong tremors were felt in Kolkata, Bangladesh after an earthquake of magnitude 6 struck Myanmar on Tuesday.
Social media platforms were flooded with posts from users describing the tremors and asking others if they had felt them, while reports also surfaced from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
"Around 9 pm, I thought I was feeling dizzy when my husband stood up suddenly from the sofa and asked if I felt an earthquake. I was wondering what really happened when my mother called. “The bed is shaking. Look at the fan. It's also shaking!” she cried in panic over a video call. I told her to get out of the house asap while I too hurried out," a Kolkata resident said.
An X user wrote, "Earthquake in Kolkata? Did anyone else feel it?"
Another said, “#Earthquake very heavy earthquake in Kolkata... my whole building was shaking.”
Data shared by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) suggests that the quake occurred about 70 miles east of Akyab in Myanmar. It said a magnitude 6 earthquake hit western Myanmar, 95 km from Yenangyaung, at 9:04 pm local time on Tuesday, with its epicentre located 57 km below the surface.
This comes after an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 struck Bangladesh on Tuesday. A statement by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 150 km.
In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.1, On: 03/02/2026 04:06:46 IST, Lat: 22.84 N, Long: 89.01 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Bangladesh."
Similarly, an earthquake of magnitude 3.2 struck Tibet earlier today. In a post on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 3.2, On: 03/02/2026 10:17:43 IST, Lat: 28.80 N, Long: 87.30 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet."
The Tibetan Plateau is known for its seismic activity due to tectonic plate collisions.
Tibet and Nepal lie on a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate pushes up into the Eurasian plate, and earthquakes are a regular occurrence as a result of it.
