Authorities imposed sweeping restrictions and throttled mobile internet services across parts of Kashmir on Monday after protests intensified over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israel strike.

Several areas in Srinagar, including Bemina, Gund Hassibhat and Jehangir Chowk, witnessed demonstrations for the second consecutive day. Protests were also reported from Pulwama and other districts in the Valley.

Large gatherings were seen in Shia-dominated localities, with protesters marching through streets, beating their chests and raising anti-US and anti-Israel slogans. In some places, security forces used mild force to disperse crowds.

The iconic Ghanta Ghar clock tower at Lal Chowk was sealed off with barricades, while additional police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel were deployed across Srinagar to prevent further gatherings.

Officials said high-speed mobile internet was throttled across all networks in the Valley as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. Educational institutions, including private schools, were ordered shut for two days for the safety of students.

Khamenei was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on Saturday during a joint operation by the United States and Israel. Iranian state media confirmed his death on Sunday, triggering protests and mourning in several parts of the world, including India.

Major demonstrations were reported from Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag and Pulwama. Authorities said restrictions were also imposed in Shia-dominated areas in other districts.

The curbs come amid a one-day shutdown call by the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who urged people to observe the strike peacefully. The shutdown call received support from several political parties, including the People’s Democratic Party led by Mehbooba Mufti.

Police issued an advisory to media organisations urging restraint and responsible reporting. “Please refrain from publishing unverified information, speculation, or rumours,” the advisory said, stressing that sensational headlines should be avoided to prevent panic and misinformation.

Officials said security arrangements would remain in place to ensure the situation does not escalate further.
