PM Modi meets Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in New York, reiterates commitment to peaceful resolution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to New York, reiterating India's commitment to finding an early resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and restoring peace and stability in the region. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN's Summit of the Future.

This marks the third interaction between the two leaders in just three months; they last met in Kyiv on August 23 and previously at the G7 summit in Italy in June.

Following their meeting, PM Modi took to microblogging site X, sharing about his meeting, "Met President @ZelenskyyUa in New York. We are committed to implementing the outcomes of my visit to Ukraine last month to strengthen bilateral relations. Reiterated India’s support for early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and restoration of peace and stability."

President Zelenskyy also posted on X, "This is already the third bilateral meeting this year with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. We are actively developing our relations and working together to strengthen cooperation across various fields. The main focus of our conversation was on enhancing our interaction on international platforms, particularly at the UN and G20, as well as implementing the Peace Formula and preparing for the second Peace Summit. We had a substantive discussion on the available opportunities. I am grateful for the clear support of our sovereignty and territorial integrity".

During their talks, PM Modi highlighted India’s consistent stance in advocating for a peaceful resolution through diplomacy and dialogue among all stakeholders. He affirmed India's openness to providing support to facilitate a lasting resolution.

Zelenskyy, in his remarks on X, acknowledged the ongoing development of bilateral relations and highlighted the focus on cooperation on international platforms like the UN and G20. He expressed gratitude for India's support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri noted that the meeting allowed both leaders to review recent developments in their bilateral ties, appreciating the positive momentum in their relationship and committing to maintain close communication.

The meeting was reportedly initiated by the Ukrainian side, underscoring the importance of dialogue in addressing the conflict. PM Modi's recent visit to Ukraine was historic, marking the first by an Indian prime minister since Ukraine's independence over three decades ago.

Earlier, PM Modi addressed the UN's Summit of the Future, which took place against the backdrop of multiple global conflicts, including the Israel-Hamas war and the situation in Ukraine. His trip included attending the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, where he also had discussions with US President Joe Biden.
