Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Programme for 14-year-old girls at an event in Ajmer, Rajasthan.

The nationwide rollout is part of the Centre’s efforts to expand preventive healthcare and reduce the burden of cervical cancer among women.

The nationwide rollout of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign marks a decisive step in India’s public health journey and fulfils the government’s commitment to advancing the vision of “Swastha Nari”, with prevention, protection and equity at the core of women’s healthcare, an official press release said.

The programme will target around 1.15 crore 14-year-old girls every year across all States and Union Territories. The vaccine will be administered free of cost at designated government health facilities.

According to the release, vaccination sessions will be conducted at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (Primary Health Centres), Community Health Centres, Sub-District and District Hospitals, as well as Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals.

Each session will be supervised by trained medical officers and supported by skilled healthcare teams. All vaccination sites will have functional Cold Chain Points (CCPs) and will be linked to 24x7 government health facilities to ensure immediate medical support and management of any rare Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI).

The vaccination will be voluntary, and informed consent from parents or guardians will be obtained before administering the dose, the release added.
