Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, questioning what he called the contradiction between speaking of a “mohabbat ki dukan” and raising slogans such as “Modi teri kabr khudegi”.
Replying to the motion of thanks on the President’s Address, the Prime Minister said such language was an insult to the decorum of public life and reflected poorly on parliamentary conduct.
Further he said that, “You may raise any number of slogans, but you will never be able to dig my grave (tum kabr nahi khod paoge).”
As PM Modi began his speech, several Opposition members raised slogans demanding that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi be allowed to speak and alleging dictatorship. In a light remark directed at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the Prime Minister said he should be allowed to sit and raise slogans considering his age. The protest eventually led to an Opposition walkout from the House.
Modi also accused the Congress of repeatedly insulting the President and termed the language used against her after the elections as “shameful”. He said disrupting the discussion on the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha amounted to disrespecting the constitutional office, adding that those who behave in such a manner had no moral right to speak about the Constitution.
The Prime Minister further criticised parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Left and DMK, saying they had been in power at the Centre for decades but had lost their political identity.
Referring to past controversies, he said certain periods were remembered for scandals, while the present era was discussed with pride.
In the Lok Sabha, the motion of thanks to the President’s Address was passed amid uproar, marking the first instance since 2004 that the motion cleared the House without a Prime Minister’s speech after his scheduled address was postponed due to protests.
