Contradicting reports of alarmingly high joblessness among its latest graduates, the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, known to be one of the most selective in India, released data from an official exit poll on April 4 indicating only 6.1% of its 2023 class remains unemployed.

In a post on X, the institute said, “Lately there has been news that over 30% of IITB students do not get jobs! An exit survey among graduating students in 2022-23 says only 6.1% are still looking for jobs. Here is the survey result for you to decide...”

However, yesterday's report is for 2024, which said that 36 percent students, 712 out of the  2,000 registered for placements, are yet to secure jobs. The placement that began in December ends in May this year.

The data was revealed by Dheeraj Singh, who is an alumnus of the institute and the founder of Global IIT Alumni Support Group, according to Hindustan Times.

Moreover, the students of the computer science and engineering department, which is the most sought after branch, have not been able to secure 100 percent placement this year, the report said. The branch usually records 100 percent placements.

Interestingly, only 1.6 percent of the students chose to opt for startups, while 4.4 percent are still undecided about their career choices. Around 8.3 percent chose public service and 12.2 percent went for higher studies, according to the data released by the institute for 2022-23. To be sure, the sample size of the data for the survey is not clear yet.
