RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, on Sunday, called for families to have three children to maintain demographic balance, while also touching upon issues of population trends, religious conversions, infiltration and the role of society in safeguarding national interests during an RSS centenary event.
Addressing a wide-ranging interaction, Bhagwat said India’s strength did not rest solely on governance, but on an alert society rooted in traditional values. He argued that demographic changes have long-term social and political consequences and must be approached with a sense of responsibility.
On population, Bhagwat reiterated his long-held view that a three-child family is essential for societal stability. Referring to religious texts and medical opinion, he said both supported the idea of maintaining a balanced birth rate.
“All scriptures say that societies with very few children gradually disappear. This balance must be maintained. Having three children is the right thing, not less than three, not much more either,” Bhagwat said.
He added that India’s population policy speaks of a fertility rate of 2.1, which, in practical terms, translates to three children. "To keep a civilisation alive, this balance is necessary. Resources also have to be managed, so it should be restricted to three," he said.
Quoting doctors, Bhagwat noted that three children, if births are properly spaced, are beneficial for families. “Growing up with siblings helps in tempering egos and contributes to healthier social development,” he said.
Bhagwat also described marriage as a social responsibility rather than merely a personal choice. “Marriage is not just about physical consent. Responsibility must be taken to care for society,” he said, linking family structures to broader social well-being.
The RSS chief identified three key factors affecting demographic balance: birth rates, religious conversions and infiltration.
On infiltration, he urged citizens to actively support the state by remaining vigilant. “People should become the eyes and ears of the government. If you suspect infiltration, inform the police so that the system can act,” he said, stressing that societal alertness was crucial for national security.
Speaking about the organisation, Bhagwat said the RSS remained open to people from all castes, including Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and maintained a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption.
Bhagwat has articulated similar views earlier as well.
In August 2025, while addressing the ‘100 Years Journey of RSS: New Horizons’ lecture series in New Delhi, he had warned that both sharp rises and steep declines in birth rates could create serious societal challenges, underscoring the need for demographic balance.
