Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, on Sunday, said English would never become part of the organisation’s core functioning as it is not an Indian language, though it would continue to be used wherever necessary.
Addressing a gathering in Mumbai, Bhagwat said the Sangh does not oppose any language but believes Indian languages must remain central to its identity.
"The English language will never be a part of the Sangh’s methodology because it is not an Indian language. However, where English is necessary, we use it there. We do not quarrel with any language. We must remain what we are," he said.
He also questioned the widespread use of English terminology in daily life, including in official practices. “Your signature on a document doesn’t need to be in a foreign language. You can sign in your mother tongue. Why should it be ‘Mommy-Daddy’? Isn’t ‘Mataji-Pitaji’ possible?” Bhagwat asked.
The RSS chief was addressing a two-day lecture series themed '100 Years of Sangh Journey: New Horizons' organised in Mumbai.
On Saturday, the RSS chief, stressing cultural self-identity, had said Indians should practise their traditions within their own homes, even if practical considerations required adjustments outside. "We are Indians. We have our own languages, our own attire. At least within the confines of our own homes, our language, clothing, prayers, food, houses and travel should be our own," he said.
Bhagwat said language, attire, devotional songs, food, homes and travel were key elements that foster a sense of self-identity. “These things should be a part of our own home. This awakens a sense of self-identity,” he added.
