Nearly a month after software engineer Yuvraj Mehta lost his life in a tragic accident in Noida, chilling details continue to emerge about the night of December 16. On that foggy winter evening, as visibility dropped sharply, Yuvraj’s car reportedly veered off the road and plunged into a deep, water-filled pit at an under-construction site in Sector 150. Moments after the crash, he is said to have made a frantic call to his father, desperately seeking help as he remained trapped inside the vehicle.
According to media reports and local residents, Yuvraj’s father has now left India and moved to London with his daughter, unable to cope with the trauma of losing his son.
“Papa, I have fallen into a drain. I don’t want to die… please save me!” were said to be his final words.
Trapped inside his vehicle in a nearly 20-foot-deep excavation dug for basement construction, Yuvraj struggled between life and death for nearly two hours. He is believed to have used his mobile phone’s flashlight to signal for help. Despite rescue efforts, he could not be saved.
On January 6, Yuvraj was driving back home when his car reportedly went out of control, broke through a drain wall and fell into a plot where a deep pit had been excavated for basement construction. The pit was filled with water and allegedly lacked adequate barricading or safety measures.
Police, fire department teams, along with SDRF and NDRF personnel, rushed to the spot. After nearly five hours of rescue operations, the vehicle and Yuvraj were pulled out — but he had already died.
Local residents blamed poor safety arrangements and insufficient barricading at the construction site for the fatal accident.
Father unable to bear the loss
The tragedy has had a devastating impact on Yuvraj’s father. His wife had passed away earlier, and he was reportedly living alone due to work-from-home arrangements. His daughter resides in London.
When she learnt of her brother’s death, she travelled to Greater Noida about 16 days after the incident. After spending two days with her father, she took him to Delhi and later to London. When media teams recently visited the family’s home, it was found locked.
Locals say the grieving father could not bear the emotional burden of his son’s death and chose to leave the country to be with his daughter.
Accountability still unclear
Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh government had assured action against those responsible. The then CEO of the local authority was removed within two days, and action was reportedly taken against some engineers.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and directed that a report be submitted within five days. However, nearly 20 days after the report was reportedly submitted to the government, it has not been made public.
