An extraordinary and emotional reunion unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district when a man believed to be dead for nearly three decades unexpectedly returned to his hometown.

The man, Sharif, an elderly resident of Mohalla Balkaram in Khatauli town, came back to his family after 28 years, leaving relatives, neighbours and locals stunned and overwhelmed.

Sharif’s sudden return took place amid the ongoing SIR process, which required him to submit official documents. This administrative requirement ultimately brought him back to his native place for the first time since 1997.

According to family members, Sharif’s first wife passed away in 1997, after which he remarried and moved to West Bengal with his second wife.

Initially, the family remained in touch through landline phone calls. However, over time, all communication ceased. Despite repeated efforts to trace him at the address he had shared, the family failed to locate him and eventually presumed that he had died.

Sharif returned to Khatauli two days ago, triggering scenes of disbelief and joy. His nephew, Mohammad Aklim, said the family searched for him for nearly 15 to 20 years across different parts of West Bengal, including Kharagpur and Asansol, but found no leads.

When information surfaced that Sharif had come back, many family members initially refused to believe it.

News of his arrival spread quickly, drawing large crowds to the house. Neighbours, relatives and acquaintances gathered to see him, while distant family members connected through video calls to witness the reunion.

Sharif later explained that limited financial resources and the lack of communication facilities at the time of his second marriage led to the complete breakdown of contact with his family.

He said he returned only because government documentation was required, after which he planned to go back.

After completing the necessary paperwork and meeting his relatives, Sharif has since returned to West Bengal, where he has been living with his wife and children for almost three decades.
