Karad South Election Result 2024: Prithviraj Chavan vs Atul Bhosle

All eyes in Maharashtra will be on this key fight in the Karad South seat where heavyweights Prithviraj Chavan and Atul Bhosale square off for a fight to the finish. The two candidates, from the Congress and BJP, respectively, have locked horns twice earlier with Chavan emerging as the winner each time.

However, The BJP is confident of turning the tables this time and has pointed to the reducing margin in the last two elections to claim am upper hand. Chavan's victory margin also halved from 18,210 votes in 2014 to 9,130 votes in 2019.

Additionally, the BJP is also drawing confidence from its victory from the Satara Lok Sabha constituency in the general elections held earlier this year. BJP's Srimant Udayanraje Bhonsle won from Satara Lok Sabha (MP) seat by a margin of 32,771 votes, defeating Shashikant Jayvantrao Shinde of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar).

On the other hand, Chavan sees no real challenge to his victory and claims that the margin of victory in the past two elections was narrow on account of rebels who cut into Congress votes. This time, the Congress has managed to wean away influential rebels from the electoral fray in hopes of clearing Chavan's path to victory.

Karad South Elections: Brief History

Since 1952, the Karad South Assembly constituency has seen only three MLAs over the past nine decades. These include Yashwantrao Mohite from 1952 to 1980, Vilas Patil from 1980 to 2014 and from Prithviraj Chavan 2014 to 2019.

The seat is being seen as a Congress bastion on account of the strong support base that the Chavan family has enjoyed here. Before becoming the Karad South MLA, Chavan served as the Lok Sabha MP from Karad for three terms.

His father Dajisaheb Chavan was Karad MP for four terms. After the passing away of his father, his mother Premala Chavan represented the seat for four terms.
