In a fresh twist in the high-profile Kanpur Lamborghini crash case, a man identified as Mohan has claimed that he, and not Shivam Mishra, was driving the luxury sports car at the time of the accident.
According to a report by News18, Mohan said the tobacco baron’s son, Shivam, suffered a seizure moments before the vehicle hit pedestrians.
“I was driving the car when the accident happened. Suddenly, he had a seizure,” Mohan said, describing the moments leading up to the crash.
Detailing the sequence of events, he said the car was moving slowly when Shivam collapsed onto him. “I got very scared. I was holding him with one hand. The car hit a three-wheeler, climbed onto the divider, and then stopped,” he said.
Mohan further claimed he tried to manage both Shivam and the vehicle simultaneously. “I got out of the vehicle and pulled him onto the driver’s seat before stepping outside. When the police arrived, I was standing outside. When the glass was broken, I came out from below,” he added.
The statements come amid conflicting claims over who was driving the Lamborghini Revuelto, an Italian luxury sports car worth over Rs 10 crore, when it rammed into pedestrians on VIP Road in Kanpur’s Gwaltoli area around 3 pm on Sunday.
Mohan had filed a surrender application before a local court, but police later informed the court that he was neither named as an accused nor wanted in the case. Following this submission, the court rejected his surrender plea.
Shivam Mishra’s father, K K Mishra, and his legal counsel have maintained that Shivam was not behind the wheel and that Mohan was driving.
They have also said Shivam suffers from epilepsy and is currently hospitalised in Delhi. The family has denied allegations of overspeeding or intoxication.
Police deny claims
However, Kanpur Police have rejected these claims. Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said CCTV footage, eyewitness testimonies and other evidence indicate that Shivam Mishra was driving at the time of the crash.
Senior officers have also pointed to videos from the scene that appear to show bystanders pulling a man believed to be Shivam from the driver’s seat.
The FIR, initially filed against an unidentified driver, was later updated to name Shivam Mishra as the accused. The vehicle has since been seized for forensic examination. Police have said that submissions made by the defence will not influence the ongoing investigation.
The incident has drawn significant public and political attention, with further legal proceedings expected in the coming days.
