  • ITBP and locals celebrated Holi at Pangong Tso, Ladakh.
  • Kids' cultural dances enlivened the festivities.
  • Event highlighted unity and warmth in harsh Himalayas.

Pangong Tso, a high-altitude saline lake situated in Himalayas, is a sparsely populated region in Ladakh manned by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Although a famous tourist destination in Ladakh, only vast stretches of barren multi-hued mountains meets the eye here. What catches one attention here is a long, narrow expanse of water that shifts in shades of deep blue, turquoise, and steel grey and changes appearance, depending on the season and time of the day.

However, Wednesday was different here as vibrant hues lit up the stark, snowbound landscape. At an altitude of 14,300 feet, personnel from the North West Frontier of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police marked Holi alongside people from neighbouring settlements.

Posting a glimpse of the festivities on X, the ITBP highlighted the unique celebration held amid the vast, frost-covered terrain. Children from nearby communities staged an energetic cultural performance, bringing cheer and brightness to the lofty gathering.

Deployed in this distant border region, the jawans joined local families in the festivities, as the rugged backdrop briefly turned into a scene of merriment. In an environment where endurance is part of daily life, the occasion evolved into more than an annual ritual — it stood as a testament to togetherness.

Security personnel and villagers came together to exchange sweets and splash colours, their shared laughter cutting through the mountain chill. Against the dramatic setting of Pangong’s icy waters, the celebration reflected warmth, solidarity and an unshakable national spirit thriving even in the harshest heights.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is a central armed police force of India, responsible primarily for guarding the India–China frontier across the high-altitude Himalayan region, including parts of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
