India has issued an urgent advisory asking its citizens to leave Iran, and on Thursday announced plans to evacuate them amid rising security concerns as unrest continues to grip the country. The first evacuation flight is scheduled to operate from Tehran to New Delhi on Friday, news agency ANI quoted sources as saying.
Confirming the preparations, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association said Indian students in Iran have already been registered with the embassy. “All students have been duly registered, the Indian embassy has collected their personal details and passports, and the first batch has been informed to remain ready by 8 am,” the association said in a statement.
According to officials, students from Golestan University, along with a few students from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, will be part of the first group to be evacuated. The final passenger list is expected to be shared later on Thursday after official confirmation.
On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi over the phone, during which they discussed the evolving situation in and around Iran.
Separately, the Ministry of External Affairs has advised Indian nationals to avoid all non essential travel to Iran. Official estimates suggest that around 10,000 Indian citizens are currently living in the country.
The advisory comes amid escalating regional tensions following warnings from US President Donald Trump, who has threatened military action if Iran continues its violent crackdown on nationwide protests. The protests began in Tehran late last month after a historic fall in the value of the Iranian rial and have since spread across all 31 provinces. Initially sparked by economic distress, the demonstrations have evolved into wider demands for political reform.
Trump has warned of “very strong action”, including the possibility of large scale airstrikes, if Iranian authorities carry out executions of protesters. Iran’s leadership, in response, has said the country is “ready for war” and has warned it would target US military bases across the region in the event of any attack.
