A complete breakdown of discipline followed by chaos in the Lok Sabha had led Speaker Om Birla to state that he felt the Prime Minister was in grave danger, Deccan Herald reported quoting Lok Sabha Secretariat sources.
The publication citing sources said that statements and media bytes issued by the MPs from the opposition and functionaries of political parties alleging that Birla's statements was devoid of facts is contrary to what the situation was inside the House.
“To place the matter in its proper perspective, it is essential to appreciate that the above-mentioned statement made by the Hon’ble Speaker must be viewed against the backdrop of the grave and unprecedented disorder that unfolded in the House on that day. From the very commencement of the proceedings, the atmosphere in the Chamber deteriorated sharply, giving rise to serious concerns regarding safety, decorum, and the dignity of parliamentary functioning,” LS sources confirmed.
The Lok Sabha last week passed the Motion of Thanks without the Prime Minister’s customary reply that was scheduled a day earlier in the face of relentless protests by Opposition members.
Before adjourning proceedings for the day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the House, stating he had advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the House on Wednesday (February 4, 2026) due to “definite information” that Opposition members were prepared to protest in an “unprecedented manner”.
Women MPs of the Congress party on Monday (February 9, 2026) told Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s absence from the House during the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address was not due to any threat from them, but was “an act of fear” as Mr. Modi did not have the courage to face the Opposition.
In a letter to the Speaker, the women MPs said they were being targeted simply because they had “consistently fought against PM Modi’s anti-people government and demanded accountability from him.” The letter was signed by MPs including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jyotsna Charandas Mahant, R. Sudha, Varsha Eknath Gaikwad and S. Jothimani.
