  • No shortage of diesel, petrol, or kerosene reported
  • Crude volumes secured exceed pre-crisis Hormuz deliveries

Countering Rahul Gandhi, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, assured the nation that India's energy needs are well secured and there is no shortage of diesel, petrol or kerosene in the country. He added that supply chains are functioning smoothly.

Speaking in Lok Sabha, Puri giving a comparative picture of how neighbouring Indian states are affected due to the energy crisis in West Asia, the minister said: "All our neighbours have shut schools, colleges and have taken drastic steps to navigate the crisis, whereas India has functioned smoothly in these 12 days." Centre and states are working in a coordinate manner to ensure smooth supplies of energy requirements.

Speaking about the severity of the crisis, the minister said : "...The world has not faced a moment like this in modern energy history...India's crude supply position is secure, and the volume secured exceeds what the Hormuz would have delivered."

"Before the crisis, approximately 45% of India's crude imports transited through the Strait of Hormuz route. Thanks to the Prime Minister's outstanding diplomatic outreach and goodwill, India has secured crude volumes that exceed what the disrupted state of Hormuz could have delivered in the same period," the minister remarked.

Ahead of Puri's address in Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the ongoing war involving the United States, Israel and Iran could have far-reaching consequences, cautioning that the conflict in West Asia may significantly impact India.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi warned that any disruption or closure of the Strait of Hormuz would directly affect India’s economy and energy supplies. He said anxiety over LPG availability was already spreading and could worsen if the conflict escalates. Stressing that energy security is fundamental for any country, Gandhi also questioned why India should allow the United States to influence decisions on where it purchases its gas from.
