Union Minister for parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju on Friday said the government has shelved a plan to bring a motion against Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for using unparliamentary language against the Prime Minister.
Speaking to reporters, the Union Minister said, "The government had earlier decided to move a motion... for the way Rahul Gandhi illegally mentioned about a book which was not published and for using objectionable language against the Prime Minister, prompting consideration of issuing a notice on multiple grounds."
Rijiju noted since private member Nishikant Dubey had already submitted a notice for the motion, the government will refrain from introducing its own motion.
"After the motion is admitted, a decision will be taken in consultation with the Speaker on whether to refer the matter to the privileges committee, the ethics committee, or bring it directly before the Lok Sabha for discussion. No decision has been taken yet," said the BJP leader.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey moved a substantive motion against Rahul Gandhi, seeking termination of Gandhi's parliamentary membership and a lifetime ban on him from contesting elections.
A substantive motion is an independent, self-contained proposal submitted for the approval of a legislative house or assembly, drafted to express a decision or opinion.
The motion was moved after Rahul Gandhi alleged in the Parliament that the government has "sold Bharat Mata" through the India-US interim trade deal and that it was a "wholesale surrender" with India's energy security handed over to America and farmers' interests compromised.
Soon after Gandhi’s speech, Rijiju had alleged that Gandhi's speech in the Lok Sabha was "full of lies" and the ruling alliance will seek to expunge from the House records the "lies" he has spoken.
