In a dramatic and rare turn of events, a 103 year old woman in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district stunned her family and neighbours after being found alive moments before her cremation, turning a day of mourning into one of celebration.
The incident occurred in Ramtek, where Gangabai Sakhare, a great grandmother, was believed to have passed away on Monday evening after her body showed no movement. Her family proceeded with funeral preparations and informed relatives, many of whom travelled from nearby areas to attend the last rites.
By Tuesday morning, all customary rituals had been carried out. Gangabai was dressed in a new saree, her hands and feet were tied, and cotton plugs were placed in her nostrils in accordance with tradition. As preparations for the cremation were underway, relatives gathered to pay their final respects.
Just when everything seemed set, her grandson, Rakesh Sakhare, noticed a faint movement in her toes. Alarmed, family members immediately removed the cotton from her nostrils. To their shock, Gangabai took a deep breath, confirming that she was alive.
The emotional scene quickly shifted. The hearse was sent back, funeral arrangements were dismantled, and grief gave way to disbelief and joy. Neighbours described the centenarian as a "living miracle" as word of the incident spread through the area.
Adding to the extraordinary nature of the moment, the family soon realised that the day she returned to life was also her birthday. Instead of a cremation, the household marked the occasion by celebrating her 103rd birthday with cake.
The unusual episode has since become a major topic of discussion in the region. Residents from nearby villages have been visiting the Sakhare household to see the woman who narrowly escaped death and received what many are calling a second lease on life.
