At least four Indian students were injured in a knife attack at a university dormitory in Ufa, the capital of Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic, the Indian Embassy in Moscow said in the wee hours of Sunday.
In a post on X, the Embassy said, "An unfortunate incident of attack has occurred in Ufa. Several persons, including four Indian students, have been injured." It added that it is in touch with local authorities and that officials from the Indian Consulate in Kazan are travelling to Ufa to provide assistance to the injured students.

According to Russian media reports and official statements, the attack took place when a teenager armed with a knife entered a dormitory of the State Medical University in Ufa and stabbed several students.
Russian Interior Ministry spokesperson Maj Gen Irina Volk stated, “The attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. Furthermore, the suspect also inflicted bodily harm on himself.”
The Russian Federal Health Ministry said that four of the injured are receiving medical treatment, with one in serious condition and three in moderate condition. The attacker, identified by local media as a 15-year-old, has also been admitted to a local children’s hospital in serious condition.
Authorities have launched a high-level probe into the incident.
Some media reports and Telegram channels claimed the attacker had links to a banned neo-Nazi organisation, though official confirmation is awaited. Eyewitnesses told local television channels that there was “blood all around” at the site, with visuals showing the injured being taken to hospitals in ambulances.
Meanwhile, the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging urgent intervention to ensure the safety and protection of Indian medical students in Russia.
“On behalf of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA), we write with deep concern and anguish regarding the recent violent attack on four Indian medical students at Bashkir State Medical University, Russia. Such incidents not only endanger the lives and dignity of our students but also create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among thousands of Indian medical students studying abroad,” the letter said.
AIMSA further appealed to the government to take immediate diplomatic steps with Russian authorities to ensure justice for the attacked students and to strengthen safety mechanisms and student support systems for Indian students studying overseas.
