The Union Cabinet is scheduled to convene at 11 am today at Seva Teerth, marking the first cabinet meeting to be held at the new office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The previous meeting took place on February 13 at the Prime Minister’s Office in South Block, shortly before the shift to the new premises.
According to sources, during that final meeting at South Block, the Prime Minister reflected on the building’s historical significance. He recounted how the first four cabinet meetings of Jawaharlal Nehru were held at Rashtrapati Bhavan following Independence. He also spoke about several landmark decisions taken from South Block over the decades and noted that strategies for the country’s four major wars were formulated in its war room.
Sources cited by NDTV indicated that cabinet meetings under PM Modi typically extend beyond formal agenda discussions. In addition to reviewing key issues, the Prime Minister is said to encourage ministers to share updates from the past week and offer feedback or suggestions.
He also expects each minister to bring some good news to the table, sources said. This may relate to achievements within their ministries or even personal milestones. Inspiring developments that could motivate other cabinet colleagues are often highlighted during these interactions.
Officials pointed out that updates from ministries such as power, water, roads, health, railways, education and IT are frequently presented as positive developments. As example, they cited the time when a senior minister shared how he turned around a loss-making government enterprise in a few months and brought it to a profit of Rs 100 crore.
Some ministers have also spoken about policy decisions that have led to tangible benefits for ordinary citizens. On a personal note, last year Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu informed colleagues that he had become father to a son.
Sources said this practice was initiated by the Prime Minister to inspire members of the cabinet. Such good news is generally shared during informal discussions after the official agenda has been taken up.
The Cabinet Secretariat, which earlier functioned from the Rashtrapati Bhavan complex, has now been relocated to Seva Tirtha. The Prime Minister’s residence is also under construction nearby.
Once the new complex is fully operational, the new Parliament House, the Prime Minister’s Office, the official residence and key ministries will be situated within a radius of a few kilometres, a move expected to ease coordination and reduce traffic disruptions caused by VVIP movement.
