Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday used the floor of the Assembly to respond emotionally to what she described as sustained personal ridicule by the Aam Aadmi Party, saying the attacks had crossed the line from political criticism into deliberate humiliation. She said repeated mockery over minor verbal slips had affected her deeply.
Addressing legislators, Gupta questioned the intent behind the criticism, suggesting it reflected discomfort with a woman occupying the state’s top post. “They don’t like the fact that a woman is running Delhi. They ask- how can a woman run Delhi? This is their mindset,” she said, maintaining a composed but visibly emotional tone.
The Chief Minister said she was being targeted for inadvertent mistakes rather than substantive issues. “If a word slips from my mouth by mistake, AAP makes memes on it and mocks me. It hurts me deeply,” she told the House, adding that such behaviour went beyond routine opposition politics.

Sometimes they make baseless allegations. They make fun of the words I accidentally utter... Anyone… pic.twitter.com/lxofWB0F3I— ANI (@ANI) January 9, 2026
Referring to recent incidents, Gupta pointed out that she had been trolled for mispronouncing AQI as “AIQ” and for mistakenly saying “Congress” instead of “British” during a speech. “They say the Chief Minister can’t even say AQI properly. They make fun of everything,” she said, calling the attacks relentless and personal.
Gupta stressed that occasional errors in speech were human and unintentional. “Anyone can make mistakes while speaking or mispronounce certain words. I made a mistake,” she said, before drawing a sharp distinction between slips of the tongue and conscious decisions.
Turning her criticism toward the opposition, she accused AAP of hypocrisy and deliberate conduct that contradicted its original promises. “But you did things deliberately,” she said, referring to commitments made when the party first came to power. She cited assurances about rejecting official perks and alleged corruption, adding, “You said you would not take cars, bungalows or government facilities, but you did.”
Gupta said the ridicule and comments were part of a pattern of disrespect. “Sometimes they disrespect me, sometimes they make cheap comments. Sometimes they make baseless allegations,” she said, reiterating that the attacks stemmed from prejudice rather than policy disagreement.
