A delegation from the Communist Party of China, led by its international department’s vice minister Sun Haiyan, visited the BJP headquarters in New Delhi on Monday.
During the meeting, a BJP delegation headed by party general secretary Arun Singh discussed at length “the means to advance inter-party communications between the BJP and the Communist Party of China (CPC)", BJP’s foreign affairs department in-charge Vijay Chauthaiwale said in a post on X.
The Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, also joined the CPC delegation, he added.
“A delegation from the Communist Party of China, under the leadership of Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister, IDCPC, visited the BJP head office today,” Chauthaiwale said.
The talks were the first party-to-party engagement between India and China since a thaw in relations after the 2020 Galwan Valley standoff.
Historically, the BJP and the Communist Party of China have maintained party-level contacts since the late 2000s, including multiple visits by BJP delegations to Beijing to meet top Chinese leadership.
Efforts to normalise relations gathered momentum in October 2024, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping meeting for the first time in five years on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The engagement helped advance disengagement arrangements along the sensitive border and reopened channels for broader dialogue.
According to a report by The Tribune, the CPC delegation will also interact with RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale at the Sangh headquarters on Tuesday.
“We are engaging with everyone who wishes to engage with us,” Sangh sources were quoted in the report, confirming the scheduled meeting with the CPC delegation.
Recently, the Consul General of India in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, visited the Tiger Hill Pagoda in Suzhou, China, to mark the inauguration of the grand exhibition "The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One" in India, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said Indian embassy in Shanghai.
