As many as 32,080 new cases of novel coronavirus were reported, with India’s total COVID-19 cases now above 97 lakh, as per health ministry’s December 9 update.
India reported 402 new deaths (below the 500 mark for the fourth day) and 36,635 recoveries in the last 24 hours, the latest release shows. Active cases continue to drop, to 3,78,909 with a fall of 4,957 cases in a day. India moved down to 9th place in total active cases in the world.
Kerala reported the most (5,032) new cases in the last 24 hours, followed by Maharashtra (4,026), Delhi (3,188), West Bengal (2,941), Uttar Pradesh (1,776). These top five states account for more than half (53 percent) of all the new cases in India.

Delhi reported the most (57) deaths, followed by Maharashtra (53), West Bengal (49), Kerala (31) and Punjab (30). These five states account for 55 percent of all the new deaths reported across the country.
About 10 states and union territories like Andaman and Nicobar, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli/Daman and Diu, Goa, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Puducherry, Sikkim and Tripura did not report any deaths today.
Deaths per million population crossed the 200 mark in the world with Belgium reporting the highest 1,497 deaths per million population. India’s reports 102 deaths per million population.
India’s recovery rate is now at 94.7 percent. Dadra Nagar Haveli/Daman & Diu record the highest (99.4 percent) recovery rate, while Himachal Pradesh reports the lowest (82 percent). In terms of cases, Maharashtra recorded 6,365 new recoveries, the most, followed by Kerala (4,735), Delhi (3,307), West Bengal (2,971) and Rajasthan (2,380).

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India now at 97,35,850 with 92,15,581 recoveries and 1,41,360 deaths as on December 9, 2020. The mortality rate in the country stands at 1.5 percent with Punjab reporting the highest (3.2 percent). More than 10 lakh daily tests were reported on December 8 with more than 14.98 crore tests carried out till date.
