A nine-page suicide note left by Bengaluru-based businessman CJ Roy, who died by suicide during an Income Tax Department investigation, has been recovered and is now central to the ongoing probe, police sources said.
The handwritten note, accessed by NewsFirst Prime, contains detailed personal, financial and business information and is being examined by the Special Investigation Team formed to investigate the case. Investigators said the contents are expected to provide key leads into the circumstances surrounding Roy’s death.
According to reports, the note opens with Roy apologising to his family and seeking forgiveness as he described taking his “final step". While the language reflects emotional distress, investigators noted that the note is methodically written and includes detailed instructions related to both personal and professional matters.
The document reportedly includes specific financial disclosures, such as details of money owed to Roy, and names individuals to take charge of his business affairs after his death. Roy also urged that long-serving employees of the Confident Group should not be removed, describing them as trusted colleagues who should continue with the organisation.
Police said statements of Roy’s wife and children are being recorded as part of the investigation. Investigators believe the financial information mentioned in the note will help corroborate claims and establish a clearer sequence of events leading up to his death.
Sources said Roy had earlier discussed several financial matters with his wife, particularly those related to funds extended to others. He had also spoken about these issues in a recent YouTube interview, stating that his wife was aware of many of his business dealings. Based on this, SIT officials are expected to question her in greater detail after the funeral rites are completed, as she is believed to have significant knowledge of his financial records and business operations.
Roy died on Friday afternoon while an Income Tax Department search was underway at his premises. Police said the search, conducted by a Kerala-based IT team, had been in progress for three days. On the day of the incident, Roy was questioned for nearly an hour and asked to produce certain financial documents. He then requested permission to go to his private chamber to retrieve the papers.
A short while later, a gunshot was heard. Police said Roy used a personal pistol to shoot himself in the chest. Income Tax officials present at the site rushed him to Narayana Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh confirmed the incident and said forensic, crime and scene-of-crime teams had examined the premises. “He shot himself and committed suicide. It is being examined to see which pistol was used. We are investigating to see how many rounds were fired," he said, adding that further details would be shared as the investigation progresses.
