A late-night outing in the heart of the national capital proved fatal for a 36-year-old businessman, who died days after allegedly being assaulted by food delivery agents following an argument.

Shivam Gupta, an only child, was reportedly punched, kicked and struck repeatedly on the head with a helmet, leaving his family devastated and seeking justice.

A resident of east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar, Gupta had gone to Connaught Place with a friend on January 2 to attend a party, according to a PTI report. Police sources said a verbal altercation broke out after he asked a delivery agent for water near E Block, close to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station.

According to police, the agent first hit him with a helmet, while two other delivery agents joined in, punching and kicking him.

Police were alerted around 1.30 am on January 3 after a PCR call reported an injured man lying unconscious and bleeding on the road. He was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where doctors found multiple haematomas and said he was not in a condition to record a statement.

Anil Kant Gupta, Shivam’s father, told PTI that his son had left home on the evening of January 2 to attend a party but did not return.

“I kept calling him, but there was no answer. After some time, I got a call from the police saying that my son was admitted to the hospital,” he recalled.

“When we reached the hospital, his condition was alarming. He was vomiting blood and not responding. We requested the doctors to refer him to another hospital for better treatment,” the father said.

According to police sources cited in the report, the case was initially booked under Sections 110 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to culpable homicide and common intention, with further sections likely to be added as the investigation moves forward.
