Bengaluru-Hosur Road caves in during NHAI work, traffic hit

NHAI officials said a stretch near Chandapura gave way during construction of vehicular overpasses

February 04, 2026 / 19:08 IST

A section of busy Bengaluru-Hosur Road caved in near Chandapura on Wednesday afternoon, triggering severe traffic bottlenecks on the busy NH-44 stretch.

A senior official of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said the incident occurred during deep excavation work for vehicular overpasses (VOPs) being built to address accident-prone black spots in the area.

“There are three proposed VOPs, of which work on two has begun. Retaining walls are nearing completion. The national highway will be at a minus-one level, while local traffic will remain at grade,” the official said.

According to the official, extra width gave way during excavation, leading to the caving in of the stretch. A service road is also under construction and will be completed first, after which the affected portion will be excavated following diversion of traffic onto the service road.

“The slipped portion is currently being refilled with soil to prevent further slipping,” the official added.
