Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport on December 4 unveiled Mobility Assist- India’s first advanced assistive support system for passengers with reduced mobility, including children and those requiring extra care.

The system was donated by Dr BS Ajaikumar, founder & executive chairman of Healthcare Global Enterprises (HCG), in memory of his son, Adarsh Ajaikumar, who lived with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and used an electric wheelchair. Adarsh experienced the discomfort and emotional strain caused by inadequate transfer support at airports, inspiring this initiative to improve travel for passengers with reduced mobility at Bengaluru airport.

A statement from the airport explained, “Mobility Assist mechanically helps passengers directly from their wheelchair during boarding, deplaning, or intra-terminal movement. It reduces physical strain, minimises risk, and ensures a comfortable experience for passengers and staff. The service is available on request through airline coordination, offering personalised, end-to-end support.”

Dr Ajaikumar said, “This contribution is deeply personal. Adarsh endured great discomfort during our travels, yet he chose to turn that pain into purpose. Mobility Assist reflects his wish to help others travel with ease and comfort. We hope it becomes a model for airports across India.”

Hari Marar, MD & CEO of BIAL, added, “Accessibility at Bengaluru airport is rooted in care, equity, and purpose. Mobility Assist is a significant step toward an inclusive airport experience. We are grateful to the Ajaikumar family and hope this sets a new benchmark in passenger care.”

Bengaluru airport’s broader accessibility initiatives include Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Programme for passengers with non-visible disabilities and sensory rooms for neurodivergent travellers. The airport is also the first in India to receive ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Level 3, recognising its barrier-free and inclusive travel infrastructure.
