Atishi is set to replace Arvind Kejriwal as the new chief minister of Delhi after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) unanimously proposed her name for the top post.
Atishi, who emerged as the vociferous face of the party when Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia were in jail, will be the youngest ever chief minister of the national capital.
On Sunday, Kejriwal said that he will step down from the chief minister's post and won't occupy the chair until he gets a fresh mandate from the people of Delhi.
Atishi is Delhi’s new CM: Know all about her
Briefing media after the AAP legislative party meeting, Delhi minister Gopal Rai announced that Atishi will lead the party in Delhi until the next assembly elections.
He added that Atishi has been given the charge under "challenging circumstances", alleging that the BJP-led Centre misused agencies to destroy AAP.
"They [BJP] wanted Kejriwal to resign when he was jail in order to topple the AAP government. However, Kejriwal decided to run the government from jail for the welfare of the people of Delhi ... he decided to step down [as CM] after walking out of jail because he wants the people of national capital to give him a fresh mandate amid a ploy by BJP to paint him as corrupt," Rai said.
Rai further said that AAP has given two key responsibilities to Atishi.

"Atishi has been given two responsibilities by the party. First is to continue the work of the AAP government with the support of two crore people of Delhi despite all the obstacles laid out by BJP," he said.
"The second responsibility is to defend all the work carried out by the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi despite BJP's conspiracy to impede them," Rai added.
He claimed that BJP wants to stop all the work carried out in the last 10 years. "They want to stop free electricity, free water, they want to ruin the schools, shut down mohalla clinics, stop pilgrimage services for the elderly," he said.
