Winter migraines: Here's how temperature changes and dehydration can cause throbbing headaches

Migraine causes: Winter comes with its share of worries but it can be an extremely challenging season for people with migraines. Those debilitating, throbbing headaches, coupled with sensitivity to light and sound, increase as the temperature drops. To avoid the discomfort, it is important to understand the dynamics and seek remedies for migraines.

Winter, with its dwindling temperatures, bring with it a host of health issues like cold, cough, flu and infections. Moreover, it can wreak havoc if you suffer from migraine. The cold triggers lead to an increased incidence of throbbing headaches.

A study published in PubMed sheds light on the impact of temperature change during winter on migraine patients. Surprisingly, it revealed that temperature change accounted for 16.5 percent of headaches among all migraine patients. This percentage rose significantly to 29.2 percent for those with temperature sensitivity, emphasising the importance of understanding individual triggers.

Causes of winter migraines: Several factors contribute to the surge in migraines during winter. Changes in barometric pressure, dehydration due to indoor heating, and increased consumption of certain foods during the holiday season can all play a role. Additionally, lack of exposure to sunlight also leads to vitamin D deficiency and may increase the frequency and intensity of migraines.

Combat migraines during colder months with these effective home remedies:

Aromatherapy: If scents work for you, try aromatherapy using lavender or peppermint oils. These have a calming effect that can beat migraine symptoms. Consider using various other essential oils or diffusers, as per your choice, to include  aromatherapy into your winter routine.

Hydration: Drinking water does not come naturally in winters. Yet, it is important to set a timer to help combat the dehydrating effects of indoor heating and ensure you drink sufficient amounts of water through the day. Dehydration is a known trigger for migraines, and staying hydrated can help reduce this risk.

Sleep well: If your winter plans involve snuggling in a warm blanket and binge-watching OTT series, hold on. Changes in sleep patterns can contribute to migraines. Make sure you maintain a regular sleep schedule (yes, even during winter holidays) to reduce the risk of migraine attacks.

Vitamin D: Exposure to sunlight is a natural way to get Vitamin D. During winter, it can lead to vitamin D deficiency. Consider eating foods rich in vitamin D or taking vitamin D supplements as advised by your doctor. This may help deal with the triggers for winter migraines.

Warm compress: Applying a warm compress to the temples or the back of the neck can help relax tense muscles and lessen migraine symptoms. The warmth also provides a comforting sensation during the chilly winter days.
