Vellayan Subbiah from India named EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2024 - 4th Indian to win the award

Vellayan Subbiah, Executive Vice Chairman of Tube Investments of India (TII) and Chairman of Cholamandalam (Chola) Investment and Finance, wins the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2024.

He emerged victorious from a competitive pool of nearly 5,000 participants, including 51 winners across 47 countries and jurisdictions for this global title, at a ceremony held in Monaco's Salle des Etoiles.

His victory has led India to win world entrepreneurship awards for the fourth time among EY regions in the last 24 years.

Carmine Di Sibio, EY Global Chairman and CEO, praised Subbiah's accomplishments, highlighting his remarkable growth trajectory.

He was acknowledged for his transformative leadership that steered his companies through strategic investments and acquisitions.

Rajiv Memani, Chairman and CEO of EY India, celebrated Subbiah's win citing his visionary leadership and customer-centric approach as key drivers behind his success.

With a career spanning over two decades, Subbiah’s journey began as an engineer and then a strategic consultant. He moved into entrepreneurship when he donned the leadership hat in his family’s business nearly 15 years ago. He is on the board of various companies including SRF Limited.

He first successfully navigated the NBFC Chola through the fallout of a troubled partnership amid a global recession, ultimately becoming the company’s Chairman and growing its market capitalization 60 times during his tenure.

Starting in 2018, he took on leadership of a 70-year-old manufacturing firm TII and began to transform the entire business through investment reallocation and acquisitions. Since then, he has helped TII’s share price grow 13 times. TII’s subsidiary CG Power has just commenced building India’s first outsourced semiconductor and test facility.

Subbiah graduated from IIT Madras and completed his MBA from the University of Michigan. He has worked with McKinsey and Company, 24/7 Customer Inc, and Sundram Fasteners.

The ‘EY World Entrepreneur of the Year’ celebrates leaders who are driving industry transformation, fostering economic growth, and addressing global challenges. Subbiah's win exemplifies India's entrepreneurial prowess and its commitment to sustainable growth and development.
