Nuclear Energy stocks gain as FM announces 100GW nuclear energy target

    Nuclear energy-focussed stocks gained as the Finance Minsiter Nirmala Sitharaman announced a target to develop atleast 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047.

    In her budget speech, the Finance Minister noted that this development is essential for energy transition efforts. Additionally, for an active partnership with the private sector towards this goal, amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act will be taken up.

    A Nuclear Energy Mission for research & development of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) with an outlay of  Rs 20,000 crore will also be set up with at least 5 indigenously developed SMRs operationalized by 2033.

    In the previous Budget, the finance minister said the government would partner the private sector to set up Bharat Small Reactors and for R&D newer technologies for nuclear energy.

    Players such as Kirloskar BrothersWalchandnagar Industries Ltd, L&T, BHEL and HCC could benefit from these announcements. As of 1 pm, Kirloskar Brothers gained around 3 percent and was trading at Rs 1914, Walchandnagar Industries was amongst the biggest gainers. The stock was up 9 percent and was trading at Rs 264.71.
