Rs 1.84 lakh crore in unclaimed funds: RBI's UDGAM portal shows how to claim your money

The UDGAM portal will only help you identify unclaimed deposits/accounts across multiple banks in one place and provides information on the claim/settlement process of each bank.

There are 30 banks that are part of the UDGAM portal as of October 2025, and these banks cover around 90 percent of unclaimed deposits (in value terms) in the DEAF of RBI.

On October 4, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the "Apki Poonji, Apka Adhikar" campaign to reunite Rs 1.84 lakh crore in unclaimed financial assets with their rightful owners.

Finance Minister Sitharaman has accorded high importance to tracing and returning unclaimed funds - currently held by banks, Reserve Banks of India (RBI) and Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF) - to rightful owners. The campaign has a simple but powerful message that every rupee saved by citizens must return to them or their families.

Presently, this large corpus is held in the Depositors' Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF), accruing a simple interest of 3 percent per annum, causing depositors to forgo substantial potential returns.

To resolve the challenges faced by such individuals and help them access their unclaimed bank deposits, the RBI had in August 2023 launched the Unclaimed Deposits – Gateway to Access Information (UDGAM) portal, providing a centralised platform for users to consolidate and track unclaimed deposits held across different banking institutions.

What are unclaimed deposits?

A bank account's journey to becoming an unclaimed deposit involves two stages.

First, savings and current accounts are deemed inoperative/dormant after two years of inactivity. Similarly, recurring and term deposits become inoperative if unclaimed within two years of maturity. Thereafter, if these accounts remain inactive for an additional eight years (totaling ten years), the funds are transferred to the DEAF, categorizing them as unclaimed deposits.

There are 30 banks that are part of the UDGAM portal as of October 2025, covering around 90 percent of unclaimed deposits (in value terms) in the DEAF of RBI.
