It is mandatory to link your PAN with your Aadhaar number under the Income Tax Act. If the two are not linked within the prescribed timeline, your PAN can become inoperative, which means you will be unable to file returns, process refunds, or carry out many financial transactions.

While most people link their PAN and Aadhaar online through the Income Tax Department portal, but if you prefer the offline, in-person route, you can easily do so at authorised PAN service centres.

Where you can link PAN and Aadhaar

There are several options for linking your PAN and your Aadhaar number. It can be done online through the Income Tax Department’s e filing portal, or at authorised PAN service centres operated by agencies such as NSDL (Protean) and UTIITSL, or in certain cases, through facilitation centres of the Income Tax Department.

If you are not comfortable doing using the online portal or face errors regarding authentication, you can visit a service centre.

What you need to carry

When visiting a PAN service centre, you must carry your PAN and Aadhaar cards, a copy of both the documents, and the applicable fee, if late linking charges are applicable.

If your name, date of birth or gender details are different in your PAN and Aadhaar cards, you may be asked to first correct the mismatch before linking the two.

How the process works offline

At the centre, you will need to fill out a form requesting for PAN-Aadhaar linking. The operator will verify your details in the system. In some cases, you may need to do biometric-based authentication if Aadhaar-based verification fails.

There may be a fee for linking your PAN and Aadhaar, which you will need to generate and pay through a challan system before the linking request is accepted. The centre staff can guide you on the exact payment steps.

Once the request is submitted, you will receive an acknowledgement. Linking is usually confirmed through SMS or can be checked later on the Income Tax portal.

Why linking is important

It is important to link your PAN and Aadhaar because not doing so will render your PAN inoperative. If that happens, you will not be able file your income tax return, any pending IT refunds may not get processed, TDS may be deducted at a higher rate, and banks may also restrict certain high value transactions.

Inoperative PAN does not mean your PAN has been cancelled, but it effectively becomes unusable for financial purposes until you link it.

A quick practical tip

Before visiting a service centre, check your PAN-Aadhaar linking status online. If it is already linked, there is no need to visit physically.

If there is a mismatch in name or date of birth, correct the error first. If these details don’t match, linking will fail even at the centre.

Linking your PAN and Aadhaar numbers is not a complicated process and ignoring it can create unnecessary financial disturbances. If the online steps feel too overwhelming, authorised service centres can complete the process smoothly with proper documentation.
