MCA portal keeps crashing days before Dec 31 deadline, and 'Extend due date' is now trending

MCA portal glitches ahead of the December 31 deadline have triggered panic among filers, with users demanding an extension as outages disrupt annual filings.

Professionals say repeated timeouts and access failures could lead to penalties despite timely attempts to comply.

With just two days left before the December 31 deadline for filing companies’ annual returns, widespread technical glitches on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) portal have triggered panic among filers, prompting a surge of demands on social media for an immediate extension.

Hundreds of professionals and company filers took to X over the weekend, reporting frequent system crashes, repeated timeouts and an inability to access the MCA portal. The hashtag “Extend Due Date Immediately” began trending as users warned they could miss the statutory deadline due to issues beyond their control.

Several users said the portal was either intermittently accessible or completely non-functional, raising concerns of penalties for non-compliance despite attempts to file on time.

“The MCA portal is still not working. It worked somewhat decently for only three days, December 25 to 28. Very little time left,” one user wrote, adding that stress from the uncertainty was affecting health.

Multiple deadlines, single choke point

The timing has intensified frustration. December 31 is also the deadline for filing GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C under GST, as well as revised and belated income tax returns, compressing three major compliance requirements into a single day.

“Putting multiple due dates on one day is not justified. GSTR-9 and 9C have become more complex; even small files are taking two days,” one filer posted.

Another summed up the pressure: “One profession. Three critical deadlines. Zero breathing space. MCA filings, GSTR-9/9C, revised and belated ITRs, all at once. Extension is necessity, not relief.”

Portal transition adds to strain

The complaints come against the backdrop of MCA’s transition to the V3 portal, which professionals say has faced repeated stability issues since rollout. Some users alleged that filings were only possible late at night or early morning, suggesting load-handling constraints during peak hours.

“As per MCA, we are ‘not aware’ of the V3 portal. But surely MCA is aware of repeated system glitches. Professionals and entrepreneurs continue to bear the brunt,” one user wrote.

Another directly tagged the regulator and the finance ministry, questioning why issues persisted during normal working hours while some filers were forced to work at 4 am to complete submissions.

Under current rules, delayed annual filings can attract monetary penalties and additional compliance scrutiny. Professionals argue that system failures could expose companies to avoidable fines and future regulatory complications.

As of Monday evening, there was no official communication from the MCA announcing an extension or acknowledging the reported technical issues.

With the deadline days away, filers say clarity, either a stable portal or a deadline extension, is urgently needed to prevent widespread non-compliance driven by technology failures rather than intent.
