If you receive a call explaining how to verify a broker’s UPI ID before transferring money, it could well be from the market regulator. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has launched an AI-driven calling campaign to promote its ‘SEBI Check’ tool and validated UPI handles, marking a technology-led shift in how the regulator engages directly with investors.
SEBI in a press release issued on Friday stated, “SEBI has introduced the ‘SEBI Check’ Tool and validated UPI handles on October 1, 2025, enabling investors to verify UPI ID, QR code and bank account details of SEBI-registered intermediaries before transfer of funds.”
The multilingual outreach initiative, being rolled out on a pilot basis, will use AI-generated voice communication to inform a sample set of individual investors about the importance of verifying payment credentials of SEBI-registered intermediaries before transferring funds.
The campaign is being implemented in collaboration with Sarvam, a generative AI company that develops models tailored for Indian languages — a move that allows the regulator to communicate in regional languages at scale.
SEBI had introduced the ‘SEBI Check’ tool and validated UPI handles on October 1, 2025, amid rising instances of fraud involving impersonation of registered entities. The tool allows investors to verify UPI IDs, QR codes and bank account details linked to registered intermediaries, reducing the risk of funds being diverted to fraudulent or unregistered entities.
Through this AI-enabled calling campaign, the regulator is attempting to bridge the awareness gap, taking investor education beyond circulars and website disclosures and into direct, accessible communication.
SEBI has clarified that all such awareness calls will originate only from the authorised number 1600-313-384, cautioning investors to be wary of any other numbers claiming to represent the regulator.
