In a volatile Budget-day session on February 1, Indian equity indices ended on a weak note, with the Nifty slipping below 24,600, intraday, after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Union Budget speech, announced a hike in the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on equity F&O trading.
At close, the Sensex was down 1,546.84 points or 1.88 percent at 80,722.94, and the Nifty was down 495.20 points or 1.96 percent at 24,825.45.

Asian Equities (Mixed)
Asian share markets mostly followed Wall Street futures lower on Monday as chaotic trading in silver made for a nervous start to a week that is packed with corporate earnings, central bank meetings, and major economic data.
US Equities (Down)
Wall Street's main indexes closed lower on Friday as investors viewed President Donald Trump's nomination of former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh as a hawkish choice to succeed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, while also digesting earnings reports and a high inflation reading.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 179.09 points, or 0.37%, to 48,892.47, the S&P 500 lost 29.98 points, or 0.43%, to 6,939.03, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 223.30 points, or 0.94%, to 23,461.82.
US Bond Yield (Up)
Yields on the 10-year US Treasury rose nearly 2 basis points to 4.25 percent, while yields on the 2-year Treasury were trading marginally higher at 3.52 percent.
Dollar Index (Up)
The dollar clung to its gains on Monday as investors weighed what a Federal Reserve under Kevin Warsh might look like, with his preference for a smaller balance sheet.
Asian Currencies (Down)
Asian currencies were trading lower in the early Monday trade, with the South Korean Won leading the losers, followed by the Malaysian Ringgit, Japanese Yen, and Taiwan Dollar.
Crude (Slips)
Oil prices fell by nearly 3% on Monday as U.S. President Donald Trump said over the weekend Iran was "seriously talking" with Washington.
Gold (Slips)
Gold extended falls on Monday, pressured by a firm dollar, as investors gauged U.S. President Donald Trump's Fed chair pick Kevin Warsh's approach to interest rate cuts, while silver recovered from a more than three-week low hit on Friday.
Fund Flow Action
On February 1, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 588 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also sold shares worth Rs 682 crore.
