Tata Group-owned Air India has tapped Tata Technologies to transform aircraft interiors, collaborating for modifications as well as use of advanced material for a futuristic experience.

The airline will optimize weight as well as seek Tata Technologies' expertise in aerospace engineering to improve the design and safety, as well as streamline operations, Tata Technologies said October 28.

Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India said the approval is a reaffirmation of the airline's capabilities to 'maintain fleet and commitment to enhancing the customer experience'.

"These innovations are set to redefine the passenger experience by ensuring that aircraft interiors are not only functional and safe but also future proof, providing passengers with
modern comfort and state-of-the-art technology," the product engineering company said in a statement. Warren Harris, CEO and MD of Tata Technologies added the collaboration will leverage Tata's global aerospace expertise, and help deliver 'next-generation aircraft interiors'.

Tata Technologies said its deep experience with leading aerospace OEMs will drive this transformation. This collaboration also positions Tata Technologies as a key player in streamlining Air India’s operations as well as Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services.

The airline has lined up more aircraft for its fleet as it prepares to capture greater market share, and is configuring fleet to optimize Air India Express as well as Vistara's routes and operations. As part of Tata Group's aviation business consolidation, AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) is merging with Air India Express, while Vistara will merge with Air India.

Air India has already announced a $400 million refit programme for a phased revamp of 67 of its legacy aircraft in the fleet. The refit programme is expected to start with narrow body Airbus A320neo aircraft, followed by the 40 wide body Boeing aircraft. This is aimed at refreshing the new Air India experience — with modern three-cabin configuration, new seats, new carpets, curtains and upholstery.

CAPA has projected a growth of 6-8% in domestic passenger traffic and a 9-11% rise in international passenger traffic in FY25 in India.
