Air India has converted 15 of its existing orders for Airbus A321neo aircraft into the longer-range A321XLR variant, a move aimed at expanding its medium-haul international network, the airline said on Thursday.

The conversion was announced on the sidelines of Wings India 2026, a major civil aviation event being held in Hyderabad.

The revised order forms part of Air India’s large aircraft purchase from Airbus, originally placed in 2023 and expanded in 2024. The combined order includes 50 wide-body A350 aircraft and 300 single-aisle aircraft from the A320 family.

Of the 300 single-aisle planes, Air India had ordered 210 A321neo and 90 A320neo aircraft. The airline has now opted to convert 15 of the A321neo aircraft into the A321XLR variant, while the remaining orders remain unchanged. Deliveries of the A321XLR aircraft are expected between 2029 and 2030.

The Airbus A321XLR offers a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles (around 8,700 km), allowing airlines to operate longer international routes using single-aisle aircraft. The model is positioned to deliver improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions and enhanced passenger comfort.

According to the airline, the aircraft will enable it to launch new non-stop international routes and optimise high-demand medium-haul services, while benefiting from the cost economics of a narrow-body fleet.

Commenting on the decision, Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, said the move was aligned with the carrier’s long-term fleet and network strategy.

“The strategic conversion of a portion of our single-aisle Airbus aircraft orders to the A321XLR is in line with our effort of positioning Air India for the future,” Wilson said, adding that the airline is simultaneously modernising its current fleet and building scale and flexibility into its future operations.

Air India has been undergoing a wide-ranging transformation following its privatisation, with a focus on fleet renewal, network expansion and product upgrades across domestic and international operations.
